Hello from Derek. While I know it's been awhile since the last update, and due to changes in Dad's health and Martha's workload, I'll be taking over the page for the foreseeable future.
While none of this is easy to write, all of you who keep up with Dad's situation are very deserving of an update. On January 2nd Dad had another scan to determine direction of his treatment. Results showed the cancer had spread to his spleen and liver and the decision was made to remain comfortably as can be, at home without further treatment and under Hospice care.
Though he has feeling in his hand with no discomfort, Dad's right hand has not been functioning, forcing him to use his left for all activities. As we can all imagine, losing your dominant hand must be undeniably frustrating. On the 23rd, he had another scan identifying the cause. It was determined that the cancer had metastasized to the brain and was causing pressure on the part responsible for motor control. He will begin whole-brain radiation therapy on Monday to slow further progression of the tumors in his brain. He's scheduled to undergo the radiation therapy daily over the next two weeks (weekends off). The radiation should cause him no discomfort but may come with additional fatigue.
Carrie, Jack and I made the trek to Edisto on the 13th to spend a few days of much needed time with Grandpa. Dad enjoyed watching Jack and Capers play together and run around the house. It was really nice being there and never easy to leave. We also enjoyed visiting with Stefanie, Aaron and Julie who are not only so helpful and caring for Dad and Martha.
Lindsay arrived in Edisto for a three week visit to spend much quality time with Dad and offering help wherever she can.
We all really appreciate your love and concern and I know Dad and Martha feel your prayers.
Much love to you all,
Derek
